Q. What does the Family Vacation Center have to do with UCSB?
A. The Family Vacation Center is located on the UCSB campus and is run by the Alumni Affairs Dept. at UCSB. We make use of many UCSB facilities: residence halls, the dining commons, the recreation center, pools, bike paths, library and more. The majority of our counselors are UCSB students and approximately 20% of our families contain a UCSB alumni.

Q. What weeks are the most popular?
A. Generally the last two weeks in July and the first two weeks in August are the most popular. If you are new to the Family Vacation Center and want the best chance attending, we recommend you select the beginning of July or the end of August. We have added a new week due to the high demand, Week 9! In future years, you will have priority.

Q. It seems expensive. How does it compare to other vacations?
A. The truth is that our vacation center is very reasonable when you consider all that’s included. We’ve made comparisons by researching similar family vacation centers in California (there are no comparable camps locally) and found that we actually charge less than any of the camps that don’t house their guests in tents and cabins. Santa Barbara is a world renowned vacation destination and our proximity to the beach makes our site exceptional.

Q. What’s the weather like?
A. Temperatures during the summer average from a low of 60 to a high of 75 daily. Evenings can be cool, so you should bring something warm to wear. Overall it’s perfect weather to be active, and a great relief if you’re coming from a hot, humid environment.

Q. Will I have to pay for anything extra?
A. Most of our families return year after year and have requested that we expand our program to include more of what the beautiful Santa Barbara area has to offer. Some of these activities require extra fees. They are primarily held off premises, and include horseback riding, sunset sailing, kayaking, miscellaneous site entrance fees, craft materials, T-shirts and bike rentals. But, you will always have plenty to do without paying extra. A typical family usually spends $100-$150 over the price of the package during the week.

Q. Do I have to be a graduate of UCSB to attend?
A. No, but one member of each suite must join a University of California Alumni Association in order to attend. Annual membership at the UCSB Alumni Association is $75 and a life membership is $400 for Family Vacation Center attendees (a $100 discount). Please go to the UCSB Alumni website for details on other membership benefits.

Q. What are the main reasons families attend the Family Vacation Center?
A. Your children are well cared for and wonderfully entertained. We are also one of the very few family vacation programs to provide comprehensive infant and childcare. You don’t have to cook, take care of your kids, or clean your room. It’s our responsibility to help you enjoy your vacation. You can choose to have time for yourself, be with your family, or both.

Q. How can we contact you if we have other questions?
A. You can click on the "Contact Us" link on the left. Or you may email us directly with any further questions you may have by using this link vacation@ia.ucsb.edu

Q. What are some of the included activities?
A . Activities include, but are not limited to, staff shows, carnivals, casino night, dancing, talent shows, swimming, campfire, bingo, arts & crafts, picnics, tennis, soccer, basketball, biking, hiking, running, and much more! The activities that are at an extra cost are in no way required nor necessary to have an incredible FVC experience!
